Time Machine backup on Synology NAS keeps breaking

I've been using the Synology NAS for over a year now and needed to clear and start the Time Machine backup from scratch 4 times. This kind of backup doesn't even provides a feeling of false safety.

The file services are set to SMB.

From what I've read it used to work fine until Big Sur.

Is there anything else that can be done here?

The Synology NAS Control Center : File Services panel allows you to enable Mac File Service. Revisit that to ensure that you have enabled Mac File Services, and the correct share for Time Machine. I also happen to have the following configured to share file NAS shares with Finder:

I also use a Reserved DHCP address for the Synology NAS that is just below the normal DHCP address assignment range for my network.

However, because the best one can hope for is that Synology is constrained to using the latest open source AppleShare sources, any change by Apple to Time Machine or the AppleShare protocol will break a NAS Time Machine handshake. The Synology forums are full of Time Machine issues. That is why I use a locally attached hard drive for my Time Machine backups per Mac rather than my Synology NAS.

Ensure that you have the most current DSM software installed.
