MacBook Pro Time Machine backup to NAS fails to complete

I have recently replaced my old personal cloud with a NAS, in order to use it as a Time Machine back-up drive for my Mac mini (2018) and my MacBook Pro (2024). I know that I have set up my NAS correctly, since I have managed to back up my Mac mini, but the Mac Book Pro won't complete the Time Machine back up. It always stops during the first few minutes, it barely manages to back up a few Gb, and then it skips ending with a "Back Up Not Completed" message. No further details are provided. I have already tried the following:


  • To use Time Machine through both wireless Internet connection and ethernet connection (2.5G).
  • To cancel in-progress Time Machine back ups and newly set up the drive for Time Machine on my NAS.
  • To exclude all drives on any clouds connected to my MacBook Pro.
  • To re-map the Time Machine back up by cancelling the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file in the Library folder.
  • To prevent any firewall from stopping my Time Machine back up.


I wish to back up only 300 Gb and I have enough space available on my NAS. Is there anything I could do, that I have not tried already? Thank you for your help.

Are you using an antique NAS that cannot be upgraded to a version that supports SMB3?

if that pull-quote applies to your Synology NAS, then you need to discuss your problems with Synology support.

The terminology around this issue is very confusing. You need to read carefully to understand exactly what is being retired.


When you back up to a Server, you use a Server communication protocol to talk to the Server. Examples of Server communication Protocols are Apple File Protocol (AFP), which should rightly be called Apple File [Server] Protocol. and Server Message Block (SMB) developed by Microsoft and revised and updated many times since it first use.


What is being retired is every version of Apple File Protocol (AFP), This is not to be confused with Hierarchical File System Extended (HFS+) MacOS Extended, or the relatively new Apple File System (APFS). AFP (being retired) is a very old Server communication protocol, NOT A Disk Format.

The main group impacted are those still using a non-upgradeable Apple Time Capsule.

As long as your Server can create and maintain a sparse bundle disk image file, that is all that is required. Disk Formats of drives for MacOS and Linux and many others are just fine.


A sparse bundle disk image is like an entire filesystem inside one single extensible file on the Server Host.

a possible problem with some NAS devices is that:


although they can make ONE sparse bundle disk image for one backup, they fail to properly make a second one without manual intervention.


What does the file structure look like on the NAS now? Did you get a second sparse bundle disk image created for the second backup?


When backups are made over a network (Ethernet or wireless), the Backups.backupdb folder is placed inside a rather odd container called a sparse bundle disk image.  A disk image is kind of like a disk-within-a-disk -- it has its own format, directories, etc. Thus the format may be different from the format of the disk it's on.

I might have found the cause of the problem, at the following address:

The page claims: "Starting from macOS Tahoe 26, Mac File Service (AFP) on SRM only supports existing Time Machine backups. As macOS 26 does not support creating new backups via AFP and SRM does not yet support SMB3, creating new Time Machine backups is not possible in this environment" (note 2 at the end of the page). I assume that this means that I cannot create a new Time Machine backup on my Synology NAS, from my MacBook Pro with Tahoe. Does it mean that the next OS might allow me to create new Time Machine backups, or that I should use a different backup strategy?

that is expected operation for a fully up-to-date but LOCAL backup drive.


A sparse bundle is only required when the backup destination is on a Server, whose native file system is unknown and frankly "don't care". Putting the entire Time Machine required "stuff" inside a sparse bundle means Time machine can ignore everything about the native file system on the Server, as long as it supports the creation of the required sparse bundle for each backup set.

That is why I was trying to suggest earlier, lack of a second sparse bundle on your Server drive suggested that Time Machine never even really got started with backup for the second Mac.


You should be able to use Finder to navigate to the Server drive, and examine what files are there, without even mussing up you hair.


if you are lucky, you might be able to manually create the required sparse bundle file, or figure out if permission on the Server drive were stopping that from happening form the second Mac.


NB >> the login credential for the Server MUST be available on the second Mac to make the connection and write its files.

Thank you for your detailed explanation. I am not really a "tech" person, which is the reason why my terminology might have been used incorrectly, but I have followed a number of online tutorials and forums, which have helped me to set up my Synology DS1525+ correctly, I believe. I confirm that I have disabled AFP and activated SMB3, APFS and Bonjour on my Synology, among other things. I am aware that Apple is not going to support AFP from the next version of Mac OS.


Following further online inquiries to fix my technical issue with Time Machine, I found out that Mac OS Tahoe 26 has a stricter policy on ASCII characters allowed in the name of your devices. Special characters appear to block Time Machine, as explained in the following video:

I was hoping that this would be the cause of my technical issue, but I am using English to name my devices and the only non-alphabetical character that I am using is an underscore. I have tried to substitute it with a hyphen and Time Machine skipped and failed again. I also emptied the cache on my NAS, as suggested by Synology and nothing changes. I might amend the name of my MacBook Pro later on, in order to use only alphabetical characters, but it will probably make no difference whatsoever.


Meanwhile, I have reformatted an old LG external drive, choosing APFS, and set it up as Time Machine backup destination. It worked perfectly well, although it did not create a sparsebundle file but merely a copy of my files and folders. I assume that this is because the external drive is very old? I am not sure how to proceed to use my Synology NAS as Time Machine destination for my MacBook Pro. I might simply wait for the next OS system, hoping that it will fix the bug, and use my old external drive as replacement in the meantime.

That is because Time Machine is giving up and telling you the backup cannot be completed.


...and based on the elapsed time, likely not even seriously started.

You can always add an additional Time Machine destination at any time. Local and remote destinations can be mixed.


Without removing your locally-attached drive, you can add the Server as an additional Time Machine backup destination, once you get it working.


When you have more than one, every-other backup goes to every-other drive. Each is a standalone backup set and can be removed whenever you wish.
