Keep getting message that my back up can't be completed because my lap top is operating on battery

I have a Mac Book Air Lap top Ventura 13.6.3. When I go to back up using my drive I get the message Your last back up couldn't be completed because your computer was operating on battery.

Small Time Machine backups take longer than big ones, Disk First Aid taking *hours* Daily time Machine backups to a half-full 2TB external drive are taking 20-40 minutes each time Internal drive has 436GB of 500GB in use... ...but very little of that changes day-to-day — most of my work is in webapps and a handful of spreadsheets If I leave the drive plugged in, hourly backups (always far less than 1GB) take even longer... ...sometimes literally hours to back up 600-800MB... ...always getting hung up between 40% and 50%, then suddenly finishing that last 50% in about a minute So I thought I'd run Disk First Aid to see if there's anything wrong with the drive... ...but for some reason that seems to involve thoroughly checking every single snapshot on the drive First Aid has been running for literally hours, and it's still "Checking snapshot 3 of 70"... ...so at this point it may be days before First Aid finishes What is that about?! The slow backups were a problem on my previous computer, and my previous drive as well. But when I got this computer a few years ago, it seemed better...for a little while Also, when I eject this drive, it takes 10-30 minutes to actually stop spinning after being unmounted... ...unless I sleep the computer, in which case it stops within 1-2 minutes I've reinstalled the system software once, not directly related to this problem, but it didn't fix this problem I've reformatted the backup drive. Twice. Then run First Aid and received a clean bill of heatlh. Each time, it's better for a few weeks or a couple months, then I'm back here again. I've read all the things, and found nothing helpful. Taking all suggestions! 2020 M1 MBA running macOS 13.5.1 — but this has been a problem for ages WP Elements 2GB external drive, APFS-formatted with USB-C direct into the computer

plug your laptop to power source.
