Epson Perfection 1200 Photo scanner problem with IOS 10.13

I am trying to use my old (and still good) Epson Perfection 1200 Photo scanner with my old (and still good) MacBook Pro, using IOS 10.13.6. My system recognises it and installs the driver with no problem, and the scanner goes through the motions when I ask for an overview, but it shows nothing on the overview pane afterwards - just a grey panel with a very small box in the top left-hand corner, framed by a rotating black/white dashed frame.

I've been through the Epson support pages and downloaded and installed their ICA Scanner Driver v5.8.23 for Image Capture (ESICA_5.8.23.dmg), with no problems flagged. I then removed the scanner from my Mac and reinstalled it, but no change.

Any suggestions?
