How to determine which Wi-Fi frequency iPhone is connected to

This has probably been asked and answered a million times but can anyone explain how I can find in my iPhone whether it is connected to a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal?

I’m aware that the obvious answer is to check the name of the Wi-Fi you are connected to, because it frequently has the frequency included in the name. But what I need to know is, when the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi channels are both named with the same SSID and password, how can I tell which of those frequencies my iPhone is using?

I know the phone has selected the best frequency for me, but I just would like to see what it is!

Device: iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.

Thank you.

Short answer: log into the Wi-Fi router and look.

Long answer.

The Wi-Fi router picks the channels used, not the iPhone.

Some Wi-Fi routers are manually configured, while others use heuristics to pick the channels used.

The iPhone can select which band to use, though a Wi-Fi router can also steer an iPhone onto a specific band depending on the Wi-Fi router configuration and capabilities.

It’s quite common for the same SSID to be used on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz.

Some SSIDs can be named with the band, and others aren’t. That’s at the whim of the network admin.

iPhone doesn’t show the Wi-Fi channel used or related data, and hasn’t since iOS 7 or so. Not via any public APIs.

Some Wi-Fi routers can be used to identify which clients are on which channels, and this router info is usually the best available option here. Usually via MAC (media access control, not “Mac” the computer) address, though lookup by IP is also possible.

If you have access to a Mac, a tool such as WiFi Explorer can be useful, as can tools available on some Wi-Fi routers. The Mac menus also show various info related to the network connection, including noise, RSSI, Wi-Fi type, and other details. iPhone and iPad and network connection details, not so much.

Hey there,

You can see which WiFi frequency that your iPhone connected with by your router settings: Go to Settings > WiFi > tap on

next to your WiFi network name> go to IPV4 ADDRESS section > router- copy the IP and paste it on your browser and then login with your router information, and you will see your WiFi frequency ,This information is usually available in the “Advanced” configuration of your router.
