At my current advanced age, it's getting harder and harder to type correctly. On my Windows PC I can turn this feature on and off at will. That is, I can tell it to echo the letters as I type them. This feature is evidently missing on the Mac. Is there any way around this?

The best way is to enter them ONCE, then have your Mac's built-in Keychain feature remember them for you, and never have to type them again:

Thanks. As matters turned out, I finally had the presence of mind to click on the question mark next to the password text box, which gave me a hint reminding me of what I had chosen as my password. I had been trying my Apple ID password over and over.
