Why do some refurbished iPhone can’t be traded in at Apple?

I recently bought 2 refurbished iPhone 12. First one comes with 100% battery, model number 3H497LL/A. Second one comes with 86% battery, model number is MGEQ3LL/A. Both phones work fine so far. Apple store listing of all my devices show 2nd phone’s trade-in value, but no trade-in value for 1st phone—which is the same as my old iPhone and iPad that Apple takes for recycling only—I believe this mean the phone can’t be traded in. Does anyone know why? Trying to decide which refurbished iPhone to keep. Thanks.

It's also possible that the trade-in value information for the first iPhone is simply unavailable on the Apple store listing due to a technical glitch.

Though I am not very sure but there could be a possibility that If iPhone is locked to a specific carrier, it may not be eligible for trade-in unless you unlock it first.

Please try again.

Answer a few questions about your current smartphone when buying a new iPhone. We'll give you an estimated trade-in value and apply it as instant credit towards your purchase. Once you place your order, our courier will confirm the date and time of your doorstep delivery and trade-in exchange.
