I need accents in Russian Cyrillic and the four old orthography letters easily accessible

I need to add accents -- stress marks -- in Russian Cyrillic for beginning students. I am using Word in iOS Ventura 13.5.

I also want to add - the four letters from old orthography - to the keyboard instead of having to copy from another document and paste.

(My tech skills are very limited, but I have access to computer-savvy help.)

Thanks in advance!

Ideally you should make a custom keyboard layout with

A possible easier solulution is to make text replacements in Word (Preferences > Autocorrect) for the missing characters and combining accent mark.

Or put these characters in the Frequently Used section of Character Viewer

For the stress accent you need U+0301, combining acute accent ́ , which you input after the letter it should be on.

You can get the layout here.

It has the accent on option /. You type it after the base letter. How pretty the accent looks can depend on the font you are using.

It should have the 4 extra letters on option 5, 6, 7, 8.

If you see errors, let me know, sometimes it takes more than one try to get it right.

To install, put the .bundle file in Home/Library/Keyboard layouts. To get to Home/Library, you need to hold down the option key while doing Finder > Go.

Then logout/login, and go to system settings > keyboard > text input > edit > input sources and use the plus button to go to the Russian category and find the new layout and add it to the list. Then select the new layout in the input menu at the top right of your screen and try typing.

The option 7 key (the accented i) now includes both the dot and an accent ...which sometimes comes out looking blobbish.

Would it be possible to compose the accented i from an undotted i? So it would look like the accented i offered when holding the i key in US keyboard, but in your custom keyboard. I don't know whether that would be a new option or an "updated" option 7.

Could you clarify a bit? Option 7 on my layout is currently small dotted cyrillic і. If you add a stress accent via option /, you should get і́ . Did you want a different character, like cyrillic capital І ?

Or is the problem that when you add the accent to the dotted i it looks messy? If it is just messy, that is primarily a font issue, you might first try using a different font

This is phenomenal! Thank you! All the new orthography characters accept the accent mark beautifully. And my tech guy had no problem adding it to my keyboard selection. : )

So no errors, except on my part -- an inaccurate description: The option 7 key (the accented i) now includes both the dot and an accent ...which sometimes comes out looking blobbish.

Again, thank you!

Thank you for your suggestion re Noto Sans. ↖︎ The screen shot ones are perfect.

I don't have a plain Noto Sans, only Zawgyi, Myanmar, Kannada, and Oriya with their bold, italic, etc. options. Which seems like lot of options but when I type in any of them the font reverts to Calibri, whether I start in a Noto Sans type or type in Calibri and then change to Noto Sans.

When typing in Calibri the accents (I didn't put any on ѳ) look like this (top line):

If I type in Calibri, the select the word and change to Noto Sans Kannada, for example, the accents go higher (second line).

If putting in accents manually after having selected Noto Sans Kannada, I have to switch back to it after every letter from Arial, which is what it switches the accents to from the original Calibri.

If I select the letters and accents and switch from Calibri/Arial to Noto Sans Kannada, it will show Noto Sans Kannada in the font window, but the accents remain high and and to my (granted, tired by this point) eyes, no discernible difference in the letters.

Is there a way to use the Turkish undotted i and add an acute accent to make a key that looks like the US keyboard held i option #3 í ? Or add the held i option #3 character to a "Russian" keyboard?

Accented vowels were used for teaching elementary Russian in Soviet so-called "national" schools, and Russian language education is likely still offered in some of the former Republics. So I would think a pre-composed character would exist.

Thank you again.

It's usually not a good idea to mix Cyrillic and Latin script in computerized text, but in case this is the best fix for your needs here is a keyboard which has í at option shift 7.
