How to Deauthorize Computers on Apple Music?

Just purchased a new MacBook Pro and migrated all of my files to it. Opened up Apple Music to get that going, and authorized the new computer. It came back and said, "Including this one, you have authorized 5 computers out of your available 5."

I'm pretty sure I don't have 5 computers, so I want to see which computers are authorized and then deauthorize any that are no longer relevant.

However, when I go into the Apple Music app and select Account Settings, it says "One machine is authorized to play content purchased with this account," and there is no button for "Deauthorize All" in order to reset everything.

So I guess the question is, why does Apple think I have 5 authorized computers but is also telling me that only 1 is currently authorized?

Reached out to Apple Support. If you do not see the Deauthorize All button in Account Settings via Apple Music or Apple TV, you can go to System Settings > Click on your Apple ID > Click on Media & Purchases > Under Account click on Manage Button. You should now see the Deauthorize All button. Click on Deauthorize All and then Authorize your device via Apple Music or Apple TV.

This is a good reminder that there is a difference between authorization and association. And yes, it describes that you can deauthorize all devices, but only if the "Deauthorize All" button is displayed—which it is not for me. I'm guessing it is not shown because Music is saying there is only 1 authorized computer. However, as mentioned, Music is also saying that I have authorized 5 out of my available 5.

So there's no way to Deauthorize All, and there's no way to find out what other 4 computers are authorized.

That makes sense. If there is only one machine authorized, which you have control of, then you would be able to use Account > Authorizations > De-authorize your computer to deauthorize it. Have you tried doing that? When you authorize a computer that is already authorized I would expect it to give the response "...Including this one, you have authorized X computers out of your available 5", where X is the correct value, 1 in this instance, but perhaps that is a bug. With only one computer authorized you should be able to authorize four more. Do you have another you could try authorizing in order to check that the authorization count is correct at Apple's servers?

Yes, I did try de-authorizing and re-authorizing my current laptop, and I get the response, "Including this one, you have authorized 5 computers out of your available 5."

I did actually solve the issue using an approach similar to what you suggested. I have an older Mac desktop that I don't use much anymore, which has an older operating system that still uses iTunes instead of Apple Music. So I loaded that up, checked my account settings, and it did show that 5 computers are authorized, along with the De-authorize All button next to it. So I de-authorized all, then re-authorized the old desktop. It said 1 computer out of my available 5 are authorized.

Then I went back to my new laptop and re-authorized it. Finally, it now declared that I have 2 computers out of my available 5 authorized, which is now correct.

I don't know why the old iTunes app displayed things correctly and allowed me to de-authorize all and the Apple Music app would not, but at least the problem is solved. Not sure that will help anyone else with a similar problem, though...
