I have a MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011) that still works quite well. But I want to back it up and can't find a CLEAR, non-contradictory description/advice for exactly what I need. I don't want to lose anything.

You will want a storage device with, at least, 2-3x the capacity that your MacBook Air has for Time Machine backups ... so, if your laptop has a 1TB drive, you would want a 2 or 3TB external drive for those backups.
