High CPU temp with no CPU load (high idle)

MBP 2018 13-inch running on Sonoma has CPU temp above 80° without any major task running (idle above 90%). When I restart it's back to a normal around 50° but during the day will jump again without any obvious reason. Sometimes doesn't happen for two days while on some days it happens 3 times a day.

Historically, other than watching videos or doing video confrencing—both high-stress tasks—heating when nothing else is running is due to useless anti-virus software, so-called "cleaning" apps, or client-side VPNs. Minions of Chrome that run in the background can also heat up the works.

When you did the Activity Monitor run, did you change its "View" setting from the default of "My Processs" to "All Processes?"

If not, some background troublemakers will not show up. Also, the AM display is dynamic, changing every few seconds. That makes AM screenshot here less helpful. We cannot see it change so you need to observe for 15-20 seconds and note any processes that keep bubbling to the top.

Better yet, post an EtreCheck Report. We are limited here where we can neither see nor touch your computer. We rely on EtreCheck. It is a safe, secure report-only app that shows important clues without our playing a protracted game of "20 Questions" with you that could go on for days.

The free version will do nicely for this purpose, although the app is worthy of our financial support.

We can see hard data about drive performance, software conflicts, and RAM usage. Etrecheck is the development of a long-serving and trusted contributor here expressly for displaying information in these forums to help us help you. It will not reveal any personal or secure information. Even with its security protection, EtreCheck is comprehensive enough for us to often see clear casues and recommend at-home fixes from one posting.

As it often contains subtle clues not apparent to the casual computer user, the report is designed to be posted here where we who have interpreted thousands of such reports can review. Please see this excellent user tip on posting long text reports like EtreCheck's.
