I know there was a major AT&T outage at this time, but today is March 8 and I am on Verizon. I updated and had the same problem.

When you start the update it asks if you want to connect to WiFi or use cellular data. The problem is that the latest update, 17.4, updates your carrier services.

I said I didn't want to connect to WiFi and so after it "finished" I couldn't connect to my carrier. I connected to a WiFi hotspot, and the phone said it wanted to update my carrier services. I let it do that, waited, still SOS. So I restarted the phone and all is good.

It seems like for Verizon at least, you need to be on WiFi when updating to 17.4

Go into System/Cellular/Cellular Data and switch from 5G Auto or 5G Only - to LTE.

We did and got service.

But LTE still works. :)

We went into System/Cellular/Cellular Data/ and switched from 5G Auto to LTE - and then we reconnected to the cell tower.

Reports are coming in that service is being restored.

I had the same problem, I restarted, disconnected from wifi, and then had somebody call the phone. That forced it back on the network and resolved the problem for me.

Ask someone who can call find-my-phone to your phone - this brought back the normal service to my iPhone!

I noticed the same issue this morning. I also did several things but did not work. I manually updated iOS software and manually shutdown iPhone again after the update, then SOS mode was finally gone! I watched below YouTube video. You may check out what they say.

I’m having the same problem. I googled it and turns out there’s an outage that’s effecting multiple phone carriers.

There is currently a massive phone outage that currently has millions of users stuck in SOS mode. It is mostly likely purely coincidental that it happened after an update.

Had to reset phone and it fixed it. Something is wrong with the update

At&t has an outage currently, same thing is happening to mine.

AT&T is currently down completely with everyone’s phone saying SOS.
