emoji short cut not working in Messages macOS Big Sur

It's a small problem but the short cut control command space to pop up emojis isn't working anymore in Messages. It's still working on Safari, like in this text field. MacBook Pro Retina late 2013, MacOS 11.7.10.

Update: Rebooting the computer fixed it.
