Contact key verification users getting message “An unrecognized device may have been added to xxx’s account”

I have turned on Key Contact Verification and asked two family members to do the same. Yesterday, after texting me, each received a notification, “An unrecognized device may have been added to

[my] account.” [my] used for my name in their contacts.

is this expected behavior?

I had the same issue just now. I went to settings and selected my profile up-top. Then scrolled down to the bottom over to “Contact Key Verification” and saw an error message and a reset option for the setting. Once I reset it and attempted to setup, it prompted that one of my devices required a software update (Apple Watch).

Once I updated the watch, the error went away. Hopefully this helps.
