2023 MacBook Air won't pair with Brother L 2395 DW Scanner

I cannot scan with my 2023 MacBook Air, because it won't pair with my Brother L 2395 DW Printer/Copier/Scanner. The printer feature of the Brother works fine. The printer shows in the Printers and Scanners window in MacBook settings. The Brother machine shows in the scanning window (as a printer), but the Mac says there's nothing on the Brother glass. I get a gray screen on the Mac when I try to scan. The Brother machine says there is no destination to scan to.

First of all, does the HL-L2395DW have the latest firmware?

The Brother HL-L2395DW is an AirPrint-supported model.

How is the printer connected?

If necessary, as a test, you may want to check whether there is a change with the Brother iPrint&Scan application (see also link above), or possibly the third-party VueScan (paid software, trial version available).
