This all depends on the total amount of data on the iPhone that will be backed up.....and.....the speed of the Internet connection on your network. Might you have that information?

Not sure how long "too long" might be, but it will take as long as it takes.

Locate your iPhone as close as possible to your Wi-Fi router and avoid using other devices on the Wi-Fi network to help speed the process a bit.

Subsequent back ups will only back up the changes that have occurred on the iPhone since the last backup, so future backups will complete in much less time.
