After recent update from macOS Mojave to macOS Monterey, lost all my music from MacBook

Would be super grateful for any help on this. Recently updated my 2015 MacBook pro from Mojave to Monterey. Everything fine and dandy EXCEPT ALL MY MUSIC IS GONE, or unreadable/unfindable, not sure.

the facts:

   •   did full time machine backup before starting any of this (so all data/music etc exists)

   •   the drive was empty (aka all music and files not on computer - that’s another story) while I made the switch from mojave to montery.

   •   restarted mac after monterey update, put all data back on machine (this could be where my mistake was - I copied it all over from time machine instead of restoring) then opened music, nothing there but stuff I’ve bought from the itunes store. (aka hundreds of cds over the years now missing)

   •   assumed (and still think) the problem was that music is looking for everything in the username>music folder, instead of where i had it.

   •   Opened music app with opt key, tried ‘choose library’ and directed it to my initial subfolder, music just hangs for about an hour and nothing happens, and then when I take a look through the folders again, it seems music is trying to REBUILD my entire library in the username>music folder (but not successfully)

   •   Tried opening app with command opt in safe mode, no dice.

   •   tried restoring username>music folder via time machine (to the empty state it was at before this whole drama) and then again ‘choose library’ and lead the app to where my music actually is, music app just loads for hours but loads nothing.

   •   an aside: had the same problem with my photos app, restored photos app from time machine, no problem, everything back how it was.

   •   I do not want to attempt a full restore of hard drive from time machine since that full restore would mean going back to mojave (I think?) and I tried this about six months ago (another long story) and Complete Chaos ensued with a hundred € at the mac store to get me back on track.

Have read through this thread and see that @turingtest2 spoke of a problem with .itl files in Monterey. Am dreading the fact that this might be the problem here. I don’t have access to Catalina or Big Sur, and don’t have an XML version of my library (and would love to know how to have one for the future, incidentally)

Would be Super Grateful for any help at all, and thanks for reading!

Why oh why... you probably messed things up, when all you had to do was to migrate your account, and all the music, photos, etc would be right where they should be, ready to use.

You don't want a full install, but you can easily run Migration Assistant, select the user account and migrate that.

If the username.

Here is what I suggest:

1) Create a new admin account - let's just call it 'admin'

2) Logout from your account, and into the admin account

3) Delete your "normal" account (this is to avoid later duplicating stuff that you have copied, and also to let you reuse the same username)

4) Start Migration Assistant, select your Time Machine drive, and then check ONLY the user account(s) that you want.

You will be running Monterey, with all your documents, photos, music, mail ... and preferences just as you had them before.

It looks like you got bit by the nasty "available" but not "free" space.

In recent years, macOS has gotten into the habit of not immediately freeing space when you delete things.

Select the drive in the Finder, and press Command-I.

What does it say in relation to available space? I am guessing that a great amount of space is "purgeable".

For example mine has some 20GB "purgeable".

It turns out that it does not readily release that space, and there is no guaranteed way to force it.

Anyway, if you see some 300GB of "purgeable", that is the reason it then (annoyingly) it says there is not enough space.

But try restarting in Safe Mode, and see if some of that space gets freed.

i tried a ‘start over’ with time machine six months back (with TM being on mojave and mac on catalina at the time) and all **** broke loose, so am a bit hesitant to try this, but many thanks for the suggestion nonetheless!

A VERY IMPORTANT caveat: when you "start over", you should really migrate ONLY the user account(s), and not other things (not applications, not settings, not "other files").

This is particularly relevant when doing a "big" upgrade (a few versions newer) or after one has already upgraded in place, year over year. The problem, often encountered in these forums, is that one may have stuff from, say, 2014, and after a sequence of upgrades that old stuff may break.

I have seen many a report where people still had silverlight, flip4mac, flash and other really old stuff.

It does take a while after migrating to reinstall some applications, but you will avoid all that **** breaks lose.

And also get a cleaner slate going forward.

very grateful for quick responses here, thanks! have created new admin account, logged out, in logging back in with new admin account am being adked to sign in with my apple id, to wit further question, do i log in to that apple id, or am i in danger of overwriting something there since i was logged into it with old account? Many thanks, @Luis!

ha, this is exactly the question i just came back onto the forum to ask, so many thanks @luis for your prompt response. totally get why i wouldn’t restore system, but if i am not restoring apps or other files, how is music going to know where to find my music library? or is the assumption that i will be able to ‘choose’ it and it will actually work re: importing?

now i seem to have a new problem. deleted old user account, in selecting info to transfer i’m being told that JUST my original user account is 388 GB and there is not enough space on the mac to transfer it. quit migration assistant, logged back into new admin account to see if trash needed emptying, nope, hard drive has 427 GB available according to finder window status, now old account gone and cant restore new account, eek. i suspect a trip to the mac store again might be in my near future. sigh. all tips appreciated.
