After recent update from macOS Mojave to macOS Monterey, lost all my music from MacBook
Would be super grateful for any help on this. Recently updated my 2015 MacBook pro from Mojave to Monterey. Everything fine and dandy EXCEPT ALL MY MUSIC IS GONE, or unreadable/unfindable, not sure.
the facts:
• did full time machine backup before starting any of this (so all data/music etc exists)
• the drive was empty (aka all music and files not on computer - that’s another story) while I made the switch from mojave to montery.
• restarted mac after monterey update, put all data back on machine (this could be where my mistake was - I copied it all over from time machine instead of restoring) then opened music, nothing there but stuff I’ve bought from the itunes store. (aka hundreds of cds over the years now missing)
• assumed (and still think) the problem was that music is looking for everything in the username>music folder, instead of where i had it.
• Opened music app with opt key, tried ‘choose library’ and directed it to my initial subfolder, music just hangs for about an hour and nothing happens, and then when I take a look through the folders again, it seems music is trying to REBUILD my entire library in the username>music folder (but not successfully)
• Tried opening app with command opt in safe mode, no dice.
• tried restoring username>music folder via time machine (to the empty state it was at before this whole drama) and then again ‘choose library’ and lead the app to where my music actually is, music app just loads for hours but loads nothing.
• an aside: had the same problem with my photos app, restored photos app from time machine, no problem, everything back how it was.
• I do not want to attempt a full restore of hard drive from time machine since that full restore would mean going back to mojave (I think?) and I tried this about six months ago (another long story) and Complete Chaos ensued with a hundred € at the mac store to get me back on track.
Have read through this thread and see that @turingtest2 spoke of a problem with .itl files in Monterey. Am dreading the fact that this might be the problem here. I don’t have access to Catalina or Big Sur, and don’t have an XML version of my library (and would love to know how to have one for the future, incidentally)
Would be Super Grateful for any help at all, and thanks for reading!
