My old iPad mini 2 does not sync with my MacBook

Hello dear community

I have an old iPad mini 2 running the latest available IOS which is 12.5.7 and I'm not able to get it synched to my MacBook Air M2 2023 running the latest Sonoma 14.2.1. I connect the iPad and it starts the Synch process and get stuck in step 7 (waiting for the changes to be applied) for ever. I'm only using the iPad to read ebooks and that's the only thing that I'm synching.

I have reset the iPad and the Mac, without any change on the end result.

can you help here?
