Since iOS 17, I can’t get message notifications on my iPhone

Up until I had this iPhone 15 pro max. I was getting text message pings on my watch and iPhone. No problems at all. Now since IOS 17 I can’t get message notifications on my phone. Apparently by design. Not a good idea Apple. My solution is I no longer wear an Apple Watch.

You are misremembering. When your watch is on your wrist and is unlocked text messages have audible alerts on your iPhone or your Watch, never on both, unless the phone is unlocked when the text alert arrives.

It has nothing to do with iOS 17; it has worked that way with every version of iOS since the Watch was first released.

If you're experiencing issues with message notifications on your iPhone after updating to iOS 17, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

1. **Check Notification Settings**: Go to Settings > Notifications, then scroll down to find the Messages app. Make sure that "Allow Notifications" is turned on. You can also customize the notification settings for Messages here.

2. **Check Do Not Disturb and Focus Modes**: Ensure that you haven't enabled Do Not Disturb or a specific Focus mode that might be blocking notifications. You can check this by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.

3. **Restart Your iPhone**: A simple restart can sometimes resolve temporary glitches. Press and hold the power button (or the power button and volume down button for iPhone models without a home button) until you see the slider to power off. Slide to power off, then turn your iPhone back on.

4. **Check App Permissions**: Go to Settings > Privacy > Notifications and make sure that the Messages app has permission to display notifications.

5. **Reset All Settings**: If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. Note that this will reset all settings to their defaults, but your data and media will remain intact.

6. **Update iOS**: Make sure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for and install any available updates.

7. **Contact Apple Support**: If none of the above steps resolves the issue, it's recommended to contact Apple Support for further assistance. They can provide personalized troubleshooting and help resolve any underlying issues with your device.

None of the text above is relevant or will resolve this, as the behavior reporting is longstanding and intended behavior of notifications.

Apple will notify on the closest active device. That’s usually on Watch, unless CarPlay or an unlocked iPhone are active nearby, for instance.

This to avoid creating a simultaneous racket from alerts on every nearby logged-in device. Which can be quite raucous, having experienced it on occasion.

This intended behavior of notifications is also why sharing an Apple ID can end with mis-routed and tangled notifications and lost two-factor notifications, etc.
