Battery suddently goes to 0% after updating to Sonoma

Hi. I've updated my 2022 MacBook Pro (intel processor) to Sonoma and since I've noticed few nights in a row when I leave my Mac on sleep mode with 100% battery and then waking up in the morning I find it with 0%. Now I tried closing all app, turning off Wifi and Bluetooth and also checking in with Activity Monitor to see if any suspicious processess run in the background.

All to no help.

Today for example, after finding my Mac again on 0% in the morning, I took a screenshot of the Battery graph as soon as I plugged it in. Here's how it looks:

I am wondering what's up with those 2 red lines that show it going from 100%-0% straight away while also showing that it was plugged in - this happened all while it was in sleep mode and unplugged.

I am a bit confused on how to fix this as everything seems normal otherwise.

And yes, I know I can keep the Mac plugged in all night but I would rather fix the issue as going all the way to 0 battery is worrying.

Thank you.

  1. Waiting for updates from Apple is not likely to produce much results, because the problem has been going for many years and they haven't been able to fix it entirely so far. I guess they are simply not able to fix this design problem of MacOS.
  2. You can try to diagnose the problem yourself using the steps offered by other users in the posts above but again, this may not fix the problem and even if it does for now, it may reappear again anytime. It is MacOS.
  3. You can contact Apple support directly via https://getsupport.apple.com/ and they will ask you to do a lot of work, to run tests and eventually to provide a bunch of data (including many files from your machine that may contain what you may consider personal information) for analysis on their side and hopefully then they will know what causes the problem in this particular case. This is a very slow, tedious and unreliable way (been there). There is no guarantee the problem will be resolved and if it is resolved for now, it may reappear again.
  4. To fix it completely, the power management of Macs / MacOS should be redesigned with user interests in mind. Unfortunately this will not happen.
  5. Possible workarounds. (1) sleep it but keep it plugged in; be prepared to pay higher electricity bills for such a Mac air heater, (2) shut it down (and unplug it to save electricity).

Fair enough. It's strange as I've been using this MacBook for almost 3 years and updated the MacOS everytime there was a new iteration yet never had any problem with the battery until literally last week. Such a shame.

Anyway, that seems like a lot of tedious work and since you mentioned the problem dates way back, not sure it's worth it. Probably just going to get in the habit of turning it off at night from now on.

Thanks for the clarity, I appreciate the answers.
