Unable to access Messenger on my iPad

After an overnight update I am unable to access messenger on my iPad. It keeps directing me to my phone to affect confirmation but there is nowhere on my phone to do this. I have tried deleting Facebook and messenger on both iPad and phone but all that has happened is that now I cannot access marketplace on my iPad either now.

has anyone got a solution?

What's the solution if you don't have a smartphone (like my parents)???

They can't open Messenger anymore on their Ipad....

@SHERRIffc : I managed to solve it at my end.

I have my “regular” phone that I use to call etc. It didn’t have the Facebook or Messenger app on it.

BUT, I think the phone number was used before to send Apple - or any related apps “notifications” to. So, the phone number was somehow linked to my FB and/or Messenger account.

I installed both apps (FB & Messenger) on this phone.

After I opened the Messenger app on this phone (it’s an Android phone, sorry Apple 😅), it asked me “Make a choice about your Messenger experience”. I clicked “Get started”.

Next screen that opened up, was “Choose your Messenger experience” : two options here :

1. Keep using Messenger with your Facebook account

2. Create a new Messenger account

At the bottom of that screen, choose : “Keep using with Facebook account”

Next screen pops up - and you need to reconfirm there as well.

I tried to open Messenger on my iPad after that, and I have now again access - and it is working again !

Hope this helps 😊

I spent ages on my landline talking to Apple support trying to be able to connect to Messenger on my I Pad this afternoon and I thought he had fixed it. Just went to play my quiz game with my friend after 3 days and it still isn’t working after all! I’ve switched things on and off and deleted and re-installed the Messenger app but no help. They really messed things up with the latest software upgrade and I’m totally fed up!

@ Earflutter :

I was lucky to not have FB & Messenger installed on my phone - so I could perform the steps I mentioned above.

I found the “solution” baffling since there was no FB & Messenger installed (I only use these apps on my iPad) on this phone - but afterwards realised I had to fill in THIS phone number , in the FB privacy settings at one point.

If you don’t have a “second device” like I did, I’m afraid my “solution” won’t work for you ?

Just check the phone number you filled in, in your FB settings - maybe it’s the number of an old phone, or another one ?

If it is the same phonenumber as your phone that has FB & Messenger on : Maybe try to completely delete the FB & Messenger app on your phone (make sure it is not still on your iCloud, it will not work then). Since you have your FB & Messenger app still on your iPad, you won’t lose any data ?

Hope it gets solved, found it highly annoying not to be able to use Messenger !

I live in Europe and just got back from a holiday in the USA which is when I stopped getting messages .I can no longer get messenger on FB . I have updated my android phone that works , I have a uk phone number which I use in Europe

what is going on ? And how can Apple pass on the problem to a third party contributor . We are trapped and no one has an easy unlock.

As far as I can see, this is an issue on Meta side. I've tried to add a phone number to my profile, only to get this "You can't make this change at the moment" message. It says "This is because we noticed you are using a device you don't usually use and we need to keep your account safe. We'll allow you to make this change after you've used this device for a while". The reason I've not been using Messenger on iPad for a couple of months now is because I'm stuck with this issue for months already. Meta, get your act together or I'll have another very good reason to leave Facebook and Messenger once and for all.

Hi yellowlot, it’s bonkers! You spend hours going around in circles, I’m sure we can’t be the only people affected? My wife came off of FB and messenger a year or so ago, but went onto her I pad and opened messenger, she got the message too. Then she opened messenger on her I phone…. There was the procedure to follow, she’s thinks because I have an android phone.. that’s where the problem lies! 🙁😜
