to help get a DHCP record set up I would like to perhaps give someone who manages my network my MAC address , the 6 numbers long thing, of currently connected adapter so that they can give me a static address. I'm rather confused by the number of ways to do this and I'm probably just missing some background.
But if there is an easier answer than getting my network administrator to help me out, that would be great in future.
Networking (ethernet, WiFi) is built into all mac Minis. Do Apple > About This Mac > System Report > Network. At the top of the resulting window you will see a list of Services (e.g. Ethernet, Thunderbolt, WiFi ...).
As you select each entry, the details for each will be shown. You can find the associated MAC addresses there.
Here's an example from my Mac (I blanked out my MAC address in the image):
Note, "MAC Address" = Media Access Control Address (not Macintosh)
But are you saying you are using an external dongle for network access?

On Sonoma, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Then click About on the right, then click System Report. Once there, click Network and follow my earlier instructions from that point. If not all details show at that point, you may need to do File > Show More Information

It's for the built-in wired Lan adapter, yes, but on my mac the screen completely looks different, I'm on the latest MacOS (Sonoma last I checked) since it's an M2 chip box and it's a dialog that hides the details that might have been there before. I am tempted to just get IT to come over or just guess at what is going on when I type in ifconfig in terminal, since only a few of the adapters in that long list are 'active', but the one that I though was my wired adapter strangely prints a mac address but does not print an ipv4 address, so I'm not terribly sure anymore if it is en0 or en5.
I'll have to add a screenshot tomorrow, that will help the next person too I'm sure.
