network setup question

By default Ethernet always has priority over WiFi.

That way you can leave WiFi enabled for unlocking with your Apple Watch, use AirDrop, etc…

This is how I have my work 14” M1 Macbook Pro setup. Ethernet connected to my home router, but WiFi active so I can unlock with my Apple Watch (VERY convenient).

I use a CalDigit TS3 Thunderbolt 3 dock which has a gigabit Ethernet port. No drivers needed. I also have 2 external monitors, and a bunch of USB-A and USB-C cables attached to the dock.

Most Thunderbolt and USB-C docks include a gigabit Ethernet port, and again no drivers needed.

I’ve also used a Belkin USB-C gigabit Ethernet adapter (no drivers needed).

And I have also used a 100 megabit USB-A Ethernet adapter, and it just worked.

I have not run into any situations where I have needed drivers.

Personally, I suggest if this is a desktop situation, you get a dock, so you have additional ports, because when at a desk, you always accumulate additional devices that need to be plugged in 😁

Easy, just make sure that it comes first in System Preferences->Network.

System Settings>Network, the interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Alternatively, you can setup a specific “Location” and configure that location to simply not use WiFi.

Probably not, most work plug and play. I have a USB-C dock with several ports, including Ethernet, and it works without installing anything.
