Apple/Verizon gift card scam ?

IPhone got ruined in salt water after went swimming with it. Verizon store said I need a new one, but can't help me because I can't remember Apple password. The rep gave me the number of an Apple rep to call. That person told me to go to Publix supermarket and by an Apple gift card for $500 and call him from the parking lot when I got it. I bought it. Then daughter said that sounded shady.

Is this ever an Apple procedure ?

That is definitely a scam. You called a number that was not Apple. You need to go back to the Verizon store and talk to the manager. The options for resetting the password are here. If you do not have another Trusted Device or Trusted Phone number that was used when the Apple ID was set up, you may have to use the third option to reset on the iforgot website.

It was actually my brother-in-law. He didn't believe any of us when we suggested. This is a bright guy too. He did insist on getting his money back.

So it would seem then that the Verizon guy who gave him the number would be in on it too.

By the way no need to be insulting. One already feels like a fool. You don't need to pile on

Thank you. It was my actually my brother -in- law. I just wanted to get him some information. He did actually demand a refund for the gift card which he got..

I don't have an iPhone so I wasn't sure how to help other then tell him it was a scam. Neither of us are great with tech. This helps thank you

That's what I think. My BIL is a smart guy who built up family business into a very successful company with projects all over the country. He has to submit the bids, wine and dine people etc, so we were surprised by this but he has "people" who handle things so he probably really doesn't know this stuff. And like me, he is getting up there in age so sometimes we are not great with the tech.

We think he should report it. I think his daughter may have dealt with it now, but I wanted to get some advice for him. He's a nice, decent guy. But I'm from Brooklyn, NY so I don't trust anybody.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.
