I hate to break it to you guys gently you cannot connect a USB external camera to Final Cut Pro X I tried to trial version. It was a waste of my time so I deleted it and only use Photo Booth free. I’m glad I didn’t spend $300 on the software I couldn’t use, but that’s apple for you very fussy. They take away their ability to connect external source to Final Cut Pro X program
What do you mean by "camera" . . . a camcorder, mobile phone, DSLR, Superzoom, action cam etc. etc. or a webcam?
With a USB webcam you can import to QT Player.
As others have told you, no camera can natively export video to most editing apps.
If you want to import video to your computer from a non-webcam camera you need an HDMI to USB Video Capture Card which can be had from around £10 upwards.
This is the setup you require with anything other than a dedicated webcam.. .. .. the camcorder is arrowed and the video capture card is circled.

If you mean to record directly from the camera viewfinder to FCP, no, you can't. This never was an option.
You may, or may not, record using Quicktime Player, depending on what camera. With most camcorders, this is not possible, regardless of software - they just do not send out the video signal over USB, so they cannot be used as "live feed" in this way, with any computer.
You can certainly record directly to Quicktime Player or Photo Booth using a USB webcam (been there, done that). Quicktime Player is much better.

I have 2 Logitech webcams with my Mac minis and they work well.

Incidentally most webcams are pretty poor. If you have a camcorder or DSLR or superzoom camera, the setup I outlined will give brilliant picture quality far superior to any webcam.
