My AppleTV (model A1469) says its "Apple TV software" in settings is running 7.9 (8163). Whenever I select update software it just says it's already updated to the latest software.
Is there any way I can get this to update to TV OS 17 so that I can use it as an end node? Or is the model too old? Thank you!

I’m afraid that the model is too old. Apple TV (3rd generation) is a model from 2012, with aging hardware at lower specifications than used today. The architecture is completely different from 4th generation or later, and is therefore not compatible with system software for later models. It has been marked as ‘obsolete’ for support purposes [1]. What functions may continue to function, depending on service, but no (system software) updates will come to this model.
A bit similar to how iPhone 5 (2012) was compatible with iOS 6.0–10.x, but not later versions.

An end node essentially allows you to re-route your internet traffic through your home IP address. It works like a traditional VPN would but it's much more secure. The latest tvOS version allows you to download the tailscale app on the AppleTV which allows the device to be used as an end node.
