SSD storage unit for iMac 19.1

Not sure which SSD storage unit I should purchase as Crucial Memory seems to be a guide as far as the storage size goes. Help

iMac 24″, macOS 14.3

If you need an external drive for your iMac, then any USB or Thunderbolt 3 (or older) drive will work fine.

Remember the Thunderbolt port uses a USB type C connector, so you will need adaptors for older Thunderbolt peripherals.

If you want this drive to be your TimeMachine backup, then consider buying a drive larger than the storage of your iMac.

If you are dismantling your iMac and replacing the SSD part of your fusion drive then there are strict instructions that must be followed - in addition to this, ALL data on your drive WILL be lost in the process.

The SSD hardware interface is not M2 (although it looks a bit like it), so you will need to purchase an SSD which is specifically manufactured for your iMac (I suggest checking on the OWC website as a starter).

(Replacing the internal SSD of your iMac is NOT simple. If you are not an engineer comfortable with electronic repairs and possessing necessary tools, then don't try this. It's not a 5 minute job that you can to on the kitchen table.).

By "SSD storage unit" are you referring to an external drive to use with your iMac? If so, it would help if you can provide more details on what criteria you need satisfied for this drive?

For example:

  • Does it need to be easily portable?
  • Are you looking for a single drive, or a drive enclosure that can support two or more drives.
  • Is high data transfer rates critical?
  • What do you want to use this drive for? Just storage? To be used to store an Apple Photos Library or Music Library? For Time Machine backups?
  • Do you have a price cap not to be exceeded?
