Thief stole my credit card and bought iPhone at Apple Store

My credit card was stolen and the thief used the card to buy an Apple iPhone from the Apple store.

Here is information I know

  1. Know the time frame (30 min window)
  2. Know the store where it was purchased from
  3. Know the item which was bought (iPhone Max Pro 6.7)

My question here is for the Apple store it should be not a big deal to find out about the purchase. The Apple should have all the needed information to lock the phone remotely.

In general has anyone a similar experience and how Apple plus law enforcement handle this cases? Do they care?

Thanks,

Apple will not provide any information to you, but the fraud department at your card issuer can get all the needed information, and they can work with law enforcement. Buying an iPhone with a stolen credit card is no different from buying, say, a sofa, a TV or a car, for that matter (yes, I bought my last car with a credit card).

This actually isn’t your problem; it is the card issuer’s. You have no liability for misuse of a stolen card unless you didn’t report it stolen, and even then, your liability is only $50 and is usually waived by the issuer.

All you can do is dispute the charge and you will be refunded the money. After that it will be out of your hands and any investigation would be done by your Credit Card company if they chose to pursue it. They may determine the cost to investigate it and file charges would be much greater than simply refunding your money. The same may be true for Apple if the Credit Card companies does a charge back to Apple. In any case they will not keep you in the loop.
