Vertical lines with dot on the top or bottom

I receive these lollipop looking characters ( vertical line with dot on top or bottom as depicted below) on a consistent basis and I am simply creating a text or reading an article. Does anyone here in the community know what they are and how to remove them. They are often upside downs

Thank you

They are the beginning and end of a text selection. If you look closely the area between is highlighted (easier to see on white background). You can drag the end icons (circles with lines) to make the selection shorter or to enlarge it. Also see: Select, cut, copy, and paste text on iPhone - Apple Support

Thank you for your response FoxFifth,

I understand they are the beginning and end of text selection but I do not understand why they arbitrarily appear when I have not selected any text.

I did not choose that text for anything.

Below is another example and all I did was open the page.

Is there a way to turn this automatic action off.

Thank you again
