Issues connecting to cellular data on iPhone After Update

Today I updated my iPhone form iOS 16.0 to 17.4. When I opened my phone I found that I was no longer connected to my cellular data. When my wifi is off and my cellular is on, I get popups saying “Cellular Data is Turned Off.” I also keep getting popups to update my carrier settings but when I click update it shows me the popup a second time. Then, it appears again a few minutes later. Something to note is that I am currently on roaming since I am out of my home country.

So far I’ve tried:

  1. restarting my phone
  2. resetting network settings
  3. deleting any vpns in settings
  4. updating my carrier in settings (this did not appear)
  5. manually setting my provider since i’m on roaming
  6. contacting tmobile support (they said ask apple)

Any idea what I could do to fix this issue? Haven’t found anyone on here with the same problem.

Ok, listen up:

After the 17.4 update i lost my service or at best it was very spotty. My number couldnt be verified, i wasn't able to receive or make most calls, and my iMessage went to green messages for everyone (even wouldn't send at times). I spent about 6 hours collectively trying to resolve the issue, 5 of those being on the phone with apple support and my carrier and we tried e v e r y t h i n g. Resetting my number, network settings, phone, iMessage, FT, running diagnostics, etc. We even switched me to an eSIM.

FACTORY RESET. I tried this as a last resort on my own before using my refurbished phone warranty to simply replace the device, and boom, everything is fixed. I did choose the “keep eSIM and erase data” option under reset.

Anyways, super frustrating issue and I imagine it can only be due to the update, but yup, save your time and fix it by backing up and resetting.

I had this issue on a brand new Iphone 14 pro max since updating to ios 17.4. Spoke with apple, gave them a lot of diagnostics and they said there is nothing wrong with the phone and to check with the carrier. Spoke with the carrier multiple times and they said to discuss with apple.

I’ve waited for the ios 17.4.1 update but still the same issue. I had signal but the mobile data would’t work and the hotspot and mobile data settings just dissapeared.

Tried absolutely everything from this thread, nothing would work.

Today I finaly did a backup and restored my phone from a mac. Now everythinf works just fine on 17.4.1. Apparently it is a bug with the 17.4 ios.

If you still have the same issue, just go ahead and restore your phone and you should be good.

Finally, I went to Apple Store and they saw a kernel panic in live apart from the issues mentioned. After some analysis, they conclude that the main board of the iPhone is failing and they proceed with the repair. Luckily, my iPhone was still in warranty period, so it was free of charge.

I hope that my broken board was due to factory defects and not due to the update, because the estimated amount for repair without warranty nor Apple Care is considerable. The new board has iOS 17.3, so I won't do any update until next version.

I experienced this problem immediately after updating to 17.4, no resolution from carrier or Apple.

I’m in the UK and use two SIMs in my phone: physical Lebara and EE eSIM. The Lebara SIM had no problems, but EE was affected as described across the multitude of threads on this issue.

I noticed my EE carrier settings version was quite old (v47 IIRC), with Lebara using the Vodafone v58 released recently. Nothing I did would cause the EE carrier settings to update…until I replaced the EE eSIM with a physical SIM.

As soon as I switched to the new EE SIM, my carrier settings also updated to EE v58 and the problem was resolved. Converted the EE SIM to eSIM using the inbuilt iOS prompt, all issues remain resolved.

So…for me, this was stale carrier settings that would not update on the relevant EE eSIM.

So, I ended up ignoring phone support with 3mobile and went to store.

I went to large shopping complex so I could go to 3mobile and if still issue there was an Apple Store.

went to 3 and they changed the sim and within seconds everything was back on and up and running.

cost nothing as she said the sim I had had been corrupted somehow…… she would not commit to saying due to the latest update.

however with new SIM in I am now also showing 5g nearly everywhere.

so was it a software IOS update that stopped my mobile service or a 5g role out issue Saturday night.

phone back on and have signal stronger than ever so after 30hrd of zero that was my answer.

9to5Mac reported (a few weeks ago) that Apple released a new version of 17.4.1, but it was only available through a computer.

On a Mac, plug the phone into the computer, open a Finder window, and select your iPhone in the side bar. If the side panel isn't showing, go to the View menu and click Show Side Bar. On older Macs you may have to use iTunes, but it is similar. On a Windows computer I believe you either open iTunes or the Apple Devices app, but I'm not familiar with that setup.

Anyway, once you have done that, there should be a "page" for your phone. Choose General from the top row, and there will be a Check for Update button. From there you should be able to update your phone the newer version of 17.4.1.

I updated "over the air" to 17.4.1 and didn't see any problems. But when I saw the article I updated again and my phone went through the whole process over again, which seems to indicate that this is a different update. Since then it has worked fine, as far as I can see. No guarantees, but several people in other threads have said this helped them.

9to5Mac reports that the build number for the over-the-air update is 21E236, but the one through a computer is 21E237.

I updated my iPhone 14 to 17.4 at noon today. I got a cellular error message. I lost all communication modes and the screen showed a continuous wave next to the wifi signal strength after the update. I tried a hard reset and no comms still. I chatted with two different Apple Support people who ran diagnostics that indicated a hardware issue and they insisted the iPhone needed to be taken to a service center. I took the phone to Best Buy (an electronics store here in the states) that was the local authorized service center. According to the service center a hardware fix for the problem would cost $500. I asked if the iPhone could be factory reset and they agreed to do it. SOLUTION: Factory reset, reactivate, reload.

So just recently talked to support and he told me at Mobile Data Options > Data Mode > Change into “Allow more data on 5G” and seems to work for me for the time being.

Also asked him afterwards if they changed this option to “Standard” after the iOS 17.4 update and the response was a yes.

Im personally a bit skeptical about the response, but who knows.
