M2 MacBook Air > M3 MacBook Air

I have an M2 15 inch MacBook Air, and it is really phenomenal! I use this for college, and when I have to use Final Cut Pro for light video editing for class projects the M2 really is amazing. I see Apple just released the M3 MacBook Air today, and it doesn't seem worth the upgrade from M2, because they're still so close. I guess it is like when the M2's came out compared to the M1's.

I think there's probably a smaller difference between the M2 and M3 MacBook Airs than there was between the M1 and M2 ones. With one big exception.

With the M1 -> M2 change, the MacBook Air got

  • A MagSafe 3 charging port
  • A better sound system
  • The ability to order the machine with 8, 16, or 24 GB of RAM
  • The ability to order the machine with either a 13" or a 15" screen

plus some CPU/GPU upgrades.

The M2 -> M3 change seems to be mostly about the CPU/GPU upgrades. But there's also this: The M3 MacBook Airs can drive two external displays when the lid is closed.

The M1 and M2 MacBook Airs; the 13" M1 and M2 MacBook Pros; and the 14" MacBook Pro that uses the base M3 chip don't have that feature. Closing their lids doesn't free up a video output; it just shuts off the notebook screen without letting you attach a second external display.
