I am unable to update to macOS Ventura on my iMac 2017

Trying to update my iMac (2017 Retina 4k version) and aware the latest OS won't work.

Tried to use software update and get stuck on the wheel "Checking for updates" and through the App Store trying to get Ventura the blue bar is stuck on "Finding Update".

Have restarted, checked server status, and tried to see what software is available through using the software update-l command in terminal all to no avail.

Any suggestions welcome!

There are factors:

Software on the computer interfering with the download process including AntiVirus Software

Notation: Disabling the AV Software may or may not solve the issue.

Removal of the AV Software may increase the chances of the download to perform as expected.

Running behind a VPN which may increase Packet losses or corruption of the download

Best Results are via Ethernet Cable to Router

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Try Again using the Software Update Applet in System Preferences

Worst case - Restart in Recovery Mode and choose Reinstall macOS

In theory, it may or may not pull down the latest version of macOS this computer Qualifies to run

Went through all the steps and the one that eventually worked was recovery mode but specifically cmd, option + r to recover from the internet (for anyone reading, this is specific to intel chips and works differently for newer models), rather than the OS that I presume was preloaded with the device. Now running Ventura! Thanks very much for your help.

I had the same issue but searched and found I was doing it wrong on my MacBook Pro 2017. I went to the AppStore and searched for iOS and there was the update to Ventura (architecture does not support Sonoma).

One outstanding issue I have that is still not resolved is the all went well except the profile I was logged in as to install the update can no longer connect to the internet. The other profile on the machine and creating a new profile works as expected. In case you run into this too, I would create a new profile that is an admin. Log in as that user, install the update. If your profile also loses internet after, log in as your original user and delete the buggered profile. Gerald
