New MacBook keeps restarting with kernel panic

Hi friends!

Hopefully I can find some help here, I've been on off the phone with apple support, with no luck so far.

My computer keeps shutting down due to a kernel panic.

The computer is brand new, and has been doing this since I got it....

I've started saving the error messages, so far I have 7 different ones.

The last thing I'm trying right now, is I have done a factory reset on my Mac and currently running with no 3rd party software - it's been holding up 2 days with minimal use. This was the last suggestion from Apple Support, but I don't see the point since this a work computer and I can't really use it for anything without 3rd party applications.

It's a MacBook Pro 16" late 2023 M3 max running Sonoma 14.3.1

Im mainly using photoshop, capture one and Final Cut.

I've attached 2 different error logs.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.3

Kernel Panics are predominately caused by hardware faults or faulty third-party kernel extensions.

Learn what to do if your computer restarts or shuts down unexpectedly, or you get a message that your computer restarted or shut down because of a problem.

To trouble shoot further you can:

—A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

This test will tell you if third party interference; most extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

unplug all non-essential third party peripherals when testing

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

all known to cause issues on the macOS

Assuming you are not running any of the software mentioned by @leroydouglas and since the errors still occur while booted into Safe Mode, I suspect you have a hardware issue.

ECC on ppnum 0x411c5c4 PA 0x10471711b00 ECC_PANIC_PA ......handle_unrecoverable_ecc_error: src 0, took ECC related exception while running in PPL context

ECC means Error Correction Code and there was an unrecoverable ECC error.

PPL seems to be Page Protection Layer

Somehow some memory was improperly modified. That would indicate one of four things:

  • a software bug
  • a third party app misbehaving
  • a hardware issue of some sort (laptop or maybe even an external device)
  • solar flare or something similar causing bits to flip unexpectedly

Make sure to disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

The only other item I could find similar to this is another another thread on the Apple forums which I was assisting. Very interesting that it was also an M3 Max.

Hi HWTech

Thank you for your answer.

I'm not running any of the antivirus etc programs.

I did have a kernel panic in Safe Mode, I was running Final Cut and capture one programs though.

I'm on my third day on a "clean" install with no 3rd party apps installed. So far no kernel panics, but I am also using the Mac only for mail and safari.

Interestingly I'm experiencing the exact same issues as the thread you linked to. The exact same chain of events. Computer freezes, black screen, purple horizontal line, then restarting. It is also only happening when using photoshop/Final Cut/capture one ie something with image correcting.

Hi leroydouglas

Thanks for the reply.

I've done heavy research to see if any of the apps should be incompatible, but all have been updated recently and should have no issues on this macOS version.

I've already done a hardware test with no issues and updated every single app.

Before formatting the computer I tried booting in safe mode - still crashed. I did however have photoshop/captureone/Final Cut open.

I'm not using any cleaners/VPN/anti virus etc.
