On most (all?) recent Mac laptops, the internal microphone is always disconnected when the lid is closed:

Hardware microphone disconnect - Apple Support

The obvious option here is to leave the lid open.

I don’t know off-hand whether an external mike will continue to work, nor do I have the hardware needed to test that.
