Does iTunes still work iPod shuffle

I have an iPod shuffle from many years ago. I got a USB3 to audio cord, hoping I could upload music from MacBook Air to my iPod. iTunes won't even recognize shuffle. Is there a way to get iTunes to recognize it?

MacBook Air, macOS 13.6

The iPod Shuffle does still work with iTunes, but you will need to use a data cable, not an audio one. It needs to be data at both ends.

Not only that, but if your MacBook is using macOS 13.6, as stated in your signature strip (although this isn't always correct), then surely it doesn't have iTunes on it? Instead, you use Finder to manage the iPod. (iTunes is still used on macOS Mojave {10:14} or earlier. From macOS Catalina {10:15}, it's Finder.

To return to the cable issue; presumably you have a charging cable for the iPod. That is a USB connector on one end and the iPod's 30-pin dock connector on the other.

The only port my shuffle has is an audio port. The charging cord is audio to USB, but my Air has USB3, which is different. Does Music app work with shuffle?

My Air is on Ventura 13.6.1. I tried Finder, dragged and dropped some songs, but they won't play on Shuffle.

Now that I have checked, it seems that you may need the specific cable designed for the iPod Shuffle, in order to connect to your computer (and yes, Finder should see it). I believe the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle needs to be connected via its dock.

Not to my knowledge.

Check to ensure that you have the correct settings in Finder. On most iPods (so I suspect the Shuffle too), if you have iTunes set to Sync with the iPod, you cannot drag and drop. If you do manage to do that, the files may not be playable.
