After Sonoma 14.4 update USB hub not working on MacBook

I have my MacBook (MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro) connected to my monitor (Gigabyte M34WQ 34 Inch IPS Ultrawide WQHD (3440 x 1440)) via a thunderbolt 3 cable.

I have my keyboard and mouse connected to the USB ports in my monitor.

After updating, my keyboard and mouse are no longer being detected on my MacBook.

Before updating, it was working fine.

I can't find anything online about this issue

Can anyone help?

thanks

I had the same issue with an LG monitor connected by USB3 -- the mouse plugged into the USB hub on the monitor didn't work after the 14.4 upgrade.

Rebooting, reconnecting wires, etc, didn't help.

However, this worked:

  1. System Settings->Privacy&Security->Allow accessories to connect->Ask every time
  2. Turn off monitor (at the wall is best) and disconnect it
  3. Reboot
  4. Reconnect the monitor then turn it on.

At this point I got a popup asking if I agreed to the assessory and I answered yes. Since then the mouse works fine. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I had a similar experience, but in my case, after the upgrade, my M1 Macbook stopped recognizing the monitors connected to my Targus DOCK192. It did recognize my USB connected mouse and keyboard. I was able to get it working again by explicitly installing the driver from Targus. One monitor was recognized right away, the other didn't come up until after I powered it down/up. I did other things along the way for which I have no idea if they contributed, including restarting the hub, reconnecting the monitors, rebooting my Mac with the power button, running a utility from Targus, changing "Allow accessories to connect" to Ask Every Time. I also connect a monitor using a StarTech hub at home, but there were no issues after the upgrade.

Long but I tried:

I used all the same wired and material with a Macbook pro intel base with SONOMA 14.4 and my Huion pen display, wheel control and pencil were working find in my software for drawings. I replug it 3 times to make sure and it’s ok. Before and after all apple recommend updates.

in the other hand, all the same equipment on Mac Studio M2 is not working! I trie to power off and back on method, monitor is detected and functional put not detected by the Huion driver that makes it impossible for the pencil to operate.

I tried to restart and USBC KAMVAS 24 (4k) not detected. This means screen is functional but noting is working for the drawing side (pencil detection).

I uninstall drivers, reinstall… uninstall drivers again, and reinstall previous version of drivers incase, tried 3 reboots in between… nothing works. I Disconnect all my accessories and used only the drawing tablet in case, nothing. I reconnected all accessories on by one and even tried a sd card. Everything is working except my pen display accessories because the driver’s cannot recognize my accessories plugged! After several communications with Huion factory. They confirmed to me that they can’t do more than wait for the next Apple update. Multiple sites are showing issues with M2 and SONOMA 14.4 with multiple connections. Was this out too soon? Please Fix ASAP

My case is slightly different. Since Sonoma 14.4 my Mac Studio not booting up if any external SSD directly (not through USB hub) connected to it.

My HDDs, connected to USB Hub permanently going ON and OFF with no stopping. I have physically disconnected all my HDDs to avoid any damage.

What an update! :(

Phew!! Upgraded to 14.4 after reading all this. I suspect that because both my docks are Thunderbolt, I made out okay. I'm using a U3224KB Dell Monitor with a built in Thunderbolt dock and I have a OWC 96W Thunderbolt Dock going to the Thunderbolt through port and it is working as is my iLok dongle with Pace copy protection that is also reported to be an issue. Hope this helps.

14" MBP M2 Max

After upgrading to 14.4.1 my (2) LG 4K displays no longer connect via USB-C. I've reset NVRAM, restarted, changed the 'Allow accessories to connect' option, powered off displays, etc, but I'm not being prompted at all to accept new devices. I didn't have this issue with 14.4.

Frustrating...

Update, tried it again and was able to get it working. Had to power off the monitors and leave them off for 5 minutes. Allow accessories to connect is set to "Always". Changing it back to "Ask for New Accessories now.

Hi everyone!

The update to 14.4.1 fixed the peripheral connection issue. However, one problem persists. When I disconnect the USB-C cable from the MacBook, upon reconnecting, it doesn't recognize the monitor and the image. I have to restart the system to get back to normal. Apple is struggling to fix this issue.

I've been using Mac for 25 years so I don't have to worry about computers, connections, and commands. Unfortunately, it seems like that time has come to an end.

I tried one of the hard drives on my 2023 MacBook Air 14.2.1 and plugged directly into the computer it did not show up. Plugged it into a USB Hub and it did show up. So too k the usb hub and hooked that up to the MacBook Pro and the hub showed up. I have the settings set to ask to add any external device right now. But plugging the same hard drive into the usb hub and nothing. Reboot and nothing. This is insane. I need the hard drives to be connected to my MacBook Pro some how. So I took the only Apple thunderbolt cable I have and plugged the hard drive into that and it showed up right away. Are USB-C cables no longer compatible? Really?

I have a similar problem - everything on my M2 Pro worked fine on 14.4 but as soon as I restarted 14.4.1 my external monitor was no longer recognised, although peripherals still worked fine. I have traced the problem to a Selore plug-in hub which I have had to remove, and found a temporary workaround to give me my peripherals by using an old hub with a connecting lead (rather than direct plug-in) but I have found no way of getting the Mac to accept power this way. The monitor itself will now only connect if plugged in directly to one of the Mac's integral ports, using a USB-C to HDMI cable - leaving me with only one port on which I have to choose between peripherals and power! I also now have no way to connect to ethernet. Did no-one at Apple bother to actually test this 'fix'?

I had a similar issue with the latest Sonoma update 14.4.1. I was using “pass through power” via a USB C hub that had my HDMI, 1 x 4TB SSD, 1 x 5TB spinning disk & supplying power to a USB C Port for syncing iPads. They all failed to work once the update was applied. A support call to Apple found that “Electron paramagnetic resonance“ was the blame. The latest patch will not let you use pass through power is the output of the hub is “questioned” by the OS. I went back to using the Mag Safe power adapter and the hubs now work. I also found out that Apple support was notified ~March 27th 2024 of this restriction.

Hi all!

I suspect this is related to my issue, where a USB-C connected display is dropped every few minutes, and then connected again within a few seconds. It seemed to work fine on 14.4.

I hypothesise that a quick fix for the issues discussed here, implemented by Apple, did something to 14.4.1 that makes USB do something bad periodically.

Using Console and filtering on USB, I see "setNominalSIgnallingFrequencies()" suddenly, followed by "hardware connection lost". This with absolutely no change of the physical connections.

This display works perfectly using HDMI via a cheap USB-C to HDMI hub, incidentally.

Tricky stuff to fault-find, for sure!
