Finder displaying only limited folder on my MacBook with macOS Monterey

Since yesterday finder has been offering only a limited display of folders, with no tree and no external disks. I can get to these, but only by going round the block. In the past I would deleted the finder plist files (Go - Go to folder etc.) and restart and that repaired finder. Now that doesn't seem to be a valid process. Monterey is up to date (could the update be the problem) and everything else seems OK. Thanks.

Since a simple reboot of your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in Safe mode. It can take much longer to safe boot so be patient.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode will often correct weird software behavior by forcing the OS to do disk repair, clear caches and other housekeeping and disables acceleration and third-party mods. When you're in safe boot, the machine won’t be at its best performance, especially with graphics, but that's expected.

Does the same thing happen while in Safe mode?

Exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally and evaluate the issue again.

Thanks for that. Yes safe mode has the same problem.

I've now managed to delete the finder plist file in Terminal but that hasn't made any difference either.

I'm not sure if resetting the PRAM/SMC is still a thing to do, but I've done it anyway, to no effect.

My Mac has been fast scrolling on and off for a while now and I'm wondering it this is related?

I'm also wondering whether uninstalling OS updates might do the trick?

Other ideas?

Thanks
