Forgotten Macbook password stuck on lock screen loop
Hi, I have a new 2023 Apple MacBook Pro 14", M3 Pro Processor laptop. I set it up then went on using my old laptop and forgot my new Mac password. I opened the new one today and it went straight to a lock screen: Sonoma screensaver, no apple menu, just a three icon menu at top right showing battery, keyboard language and standby - 3 options on this button are restart, shut down and sleep. At screen bottom is my ID name and logo, with an 'enter your password' space. I've clearly forgotten my correct password as all variations are rejected and it locks me out for increasing amounts of time.
I rang a tech helpline from the store I bought it and they tried to take me through rebooting in recovery to reset the password but if I select restart from the standby menu or shut down and restart from the power button then press CMD + R until the apple logo appears it just goes back to the same lock screen. There's nothing on the new laptop so I wouldn't mind resetting the whole thing but they couldn't do that either because no recovery screen appears. They gave up and told me to take it back to the store.
The new mac doesn't yet have icloud activated or filevault (internet tips mention these).
Is there anything I can do before I take it back to the store? Thankyou for any help.
