Scanning to searchable pdf with canon printers

I have a Canon mf643cdw printer on my local area network and it works fine with my MacBook most of the time.

However, the mf643cdw should be able to generate searchable PDFs, but I have never successfully done this.

Canon says, "Leider müssen wir Ihnen mitteilen, dass OCR-Scans nur auf der Windows Version der MF Scan Utility " -> Unfortunately, OCR scan only work with the Windows Version der MF Scan Utility.

I assume that the OCR process occurs in the printer system, as is the case for HP systems, and that MF Scan Utility just triggers the OCR process.

Does anyone know a workaround for this or should the whole Apple community avoid Canon products?

So, Canon only provides the ability to OCR scanned PDFs on Windows.

Apple does not provide any means to OCR a PDF in macOS. However, the paid, non-subscription VueScan Professional (free trial) can OCR a PDF (you can even choose the language for the OCR text) while scanning and provide you with a finished searchable PDF. VueScan supports your Canon mf643cdw on macOS without any Canon software or drivers.

VueScan has an online or PDF manual available.
