Apple USB SuperDrive not showing in Finder

Normally when I put a CD / DVD into the drive it automatically fires up and the drive icon appears on the desk top. When I inserted a CD / DVD of unknown type (to me), it spun up, did its usual reading sounds and then eventually stopped. I looked up at the iMac display ready to eject the disc (and throw it away), but icon for the Super drive was not there. I have used Finder without success. I have looked on these help pages, and did a 'System report' which shows the Mac thinks there is a USB Super Drive, but still not icon so I can eject the (faulty) disk.

Try opening the Disk Utility app on your Mac and see if the SuperDrive shows up there. If it does, you should be able to 'Unmount' it with the button on the top right, which should eject the disk.

If that doesn't work, restart your Mac while holding the left mouse button while it boots. This should eject it.

If all else fails, open the Terminal app and type this command, then press Return:

dsrutil eject
