iOS 17.4 and watchOS 10.4 impacting battery life and heating issues

After updating my iPhone 15 Pro Max to IOS 17.4, the battery drain is very high. It drops 5-10% every 10 mins on just scrolling through instagram. Plus I have noticed the heating issue is much much worse than when I purchased the phone back in September. In just 10 mins the phone becomes as hot as the sun even with a thick plastic case. And its not just my iPhone, my Apple watch Ultra 2 is having the same battery drain issue after updating to watchOS 10.4. While I'm asleep with the watch on, it used to drop just 4-5% in 8 hours but now 10-14% drop in just 8 hours. Please fix these issues ASAP Apple. My battery health is 100% and charging cycle is 94. Phone was purchased 1 week after launch.

I was having the same issue! It literally felt like it happened overnight because my watch was fine the day before. My watch was at 86% around 10/11am and by 1pm my watch was at 15%. I don’t really use my watch at work besides checking the time or seeing when I have a notification so the battery drain was ridiculous. I did the unpair and repair but that didn’t work for me. When I did the force restart (holding down side button and Digital Crown) plus turning off the “Always on” and “Background app refresh” option, my watch has been holding a charge. Went to bed with 99% and woke up at 92%.

I’ve been having similar issue after 10.4 upgrade with my Apple Watch Series 9. My nephew mentioned to me same thing. At this point I’ve taken just about all 3rd party apps off to see, but I only had a small handful. I don’t leave the screen on all the time (only on wrist movement). I had it charged to 100% by 1 pm today before I went out and it’s at 41% at 8:07 pm. No workouts today, music or anything. Just been on my wrist and hardly used. Enough to say the watch isn’t too usable now. I need to charge it before bed and in tha AM again since I use it for sleep tracking. When I first got the watch at Christmas time, I didn’t do much with it and would have 70-75% battery life at the end of the day. Was fairly confident I could have gotten a full 2 days of light use if needed. Now I doubt it will get to 18 hours and doesn’t work out well if I keep it on for sleep all night.

Similar here. iPhone 14 Pro Max is now on 17.4.1 and Apple Watch 9 is on watchOS 10-4. Two days in and my watch (battery health at 97%) went from 100% at 8am to completely dead by 3pm. I charged it to 88% and it was dead again by 9pm. Charged to full and was down nearly 20% within an hour. I had a call with Apple support and went through diagnostics and all of the usual “try turning off background app refresh, etc.” No help. To be honest, we shouldn’t have to do that. I had this happen once with a previous Apple Watch and it was ultimately fixed with a subsequent update. I’m guessing that’s what it’ll take now… if enough people are complaining about it, they’ll sort it out.

I also have this issue on both watchOS 10.4 and iOS 17.4

My Ultra 2 is draining at 30% in 5 hours of just sitting at my desk, the phone is slightly better. I opened a case with AppleCare (not ever expecting an answer) and with the beta program. We'll see what happens, but rebooting and rebuilding/re-pairing do nothing to fix the problem.

I welcome any tips on what to try next.

I am having the same issue withy my iWatch. I have had to put my watch in low power mode and even then within 12 hours I only have less than 10% left. I’ve tried resetting the watch as suggested with no luck. My overall battery health is 83% so this should not be happening. Help!

83% is pretty close to end of life for the battery. I suggest you contact Apple and have them run diagnostics. They can determine more precisely what at the overall battery health is. You may need a new battery.

Just updated my watch to 10.4 and within 2 hours I’ve lost 18% of my battery life. The last two updates have ruined battery life and make the watch entirely useless since it won’t even last from when I put it on in the morning to the end of the work day. Two/three months ago it would last between 48-60 hours on a single charge. My wife is having the same problem so I know it’s not my battery crapping out all of a sudden. This is absolutely ridiculous.
