AirTag found on car registered under my apple id

I received a notification that an AirTag was moving with me and the owner can see its location. The AirTag owner registered it under my Apple ID. When I called apple to disable it they told me they couldn’t because I am not the owner! How was the owner of the AirTag tracking me ( found it on my car) able to register it under me?

iPhone 14, iOS 17

The only possible way someone can "register" an Apple AirTag to your Apple ID, would be if they knew your Apple ID credentials (username & password).

So, you actually have this AirTag in your possession now? If so, I suggest you do the following two things ASAP:

  1. Change your Apple ID password. Ref: https://appleid.apple.com/
  2. Remove the battery from the AirTag. Ref: How to replace the battery in your AirTag - Apple Support << Use the steps in this support article to remove, NOT replace, the tag's battery.
