can not connect Yahoo account on mail app on iMac late 2013 Catalina 10.15.7

Hallo anyone.

That's my issue.

Any time I try to add a Yahoo account to my mail on iMac, I get this message (I translate from Italian) "Authentication not succeeded. It is impossible to perform an authentication on Yahoo. Please try later".

Please do notice that:

  1. I can perfectly access and use Yahoo mail account on my iPhone SE 3d generation. It works just fine
  2. I can perfectly access and use Yahoo mail account on my Ipad Air 5th generation. It works just fine
  3. I can also access and use Yahoo mail through my Safari browser on my iMac
  4. I've contacted both Apple and Yahoo support on the phone. Each said "ask the other" : Apple sent me to Yahoo, and Yahoo sent me to Apple, both after doing come checks and trial.

I'm stuck.

Thanks a lot for any possible help

Cheers

Andrea

PS I shall add that any time I try to create a Yahoo mail account on Mail on iMac, although I cannot succeed, I get a mail for Yahoo saying :"Your Yahoo account -my mail address - has just been used to access to Mac OS X. If it was you, no need to perform any operation. If is wasn't you, please use that link to break the connection and create a new password"

Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…

Yahoo has gone to this too...

Yahoo App password…

Generate and manage third-party app passwords

Some older, third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To access your Yahoo Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a long, randomly generated code that gives a non-Yahoo app permission to access your Yahoo account. You’ll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your third-party email app.

Most likely biggest factor is using Other in Mail setup, then using a Browser that doesn’t have Yahoo PW stored init to get the App PW.

HI!

Thanks for your kind reply.

I'm sorry, since I see I didn't make myself clear enough.

The procedure I apply is the following:

  1. I open Mail
  2. I go into "add a new account"
  3. It appears a menu with several mail provider, I choose Yahoo
  4. It asks me the mail address, which exists and works, both on Iphone, iPad, and on any browser via Yahoo
  5. I add then my yahoo mail
  6. then, it asks me the password (working fine and verified)
  7. At this point, it appears the message specified in my opening message: "Authentication not succeeded. It is impossible to perform an authentication on Yahoo. Please try later".

And that is it. No possible choices, settings, no nothing. I don't have any idea if it is using POP or IMAP, I cannot verify it. And I cannot change it, whatever it is.

Finally, I'm sorry but I don't know what "PW" stands for.

Thanks for you help anyway, nice try.

Sorry if I miss something, in that case, please be kind again and explain

All the best, have a nice day

Sorry man, but that's a real killer!!!

No way

I tried all the suggested procedure, quite simple in fact, and the only thing I get is the same old, and by now, quite annoying message:

"Authentication not succeeded. It is impossible to perform an authentication on Yahoo. Please try later".

It is really discomforting

But thanks for your help anyway

Have a nice day
