Messages between Mac & iPhone not syncing after upgrade to MacOS Sonoma 14.4 & iOS 17.4

The syncing process between MacBook Air (M2 2022 / MacOS 14.4) and iphone Pro Max 15 iOS 17.4 is broken. Everything worked fine and after the upgrade some messages are synced and some not. I have to different sets of messages (iMessages & SMS) on MacBook & iPhone. I tried to remove all messages and switching sync in the cloud off and then back on but id does not help.

It seems like if iPhone & Mac are near each other and are on - the messages are is sync, but when I'm away and send/receive few messages on iPhone they stay on iPhone and does not sync to Mac and vice versa.

Any ideas for help? I called Apple support but they were unable to help.

In my case ExpressVPN on my Mac seems to be the issue. When express VPN is on, my Mac doesn't get SMSs from my iPhone even after forcing a sync. Turn VPN off and force a sync and the missing messages are synced. Running Mac OS 15.0.1 and iOS 18.0.1

In response to yoichi.takayama on 9/10/24, in my opinion, the reason you should sync iPhone first is that messages appear as they should on iPhone; you would not want to first sync your Mac messages to iCloud, since there are missing messages on your Mac. The goal is for Mac to pull down the complete messages that your iPhone synced to iCloud first. That being said, I still have a problem with SMS (green) text messages that sync from iPhone to Mac, but not in the same order as they appear on the iPhone.

The point of this entire issue is the fact that messages were syncing seamlessly between iPhone and Mac prior to Sonoma 14.4, and then stopped. Users now have to intervene manually by going through extra steps to try to get messages to sync between iPhone and Mac. Even after doing that, Mac may pull down a previously missing message string that iPhone synced to iCloud, but the message string does not appear on Mac in the same order that it appears on iPhone. We are now at Sonoma 14.6.1. Users have been posting on this bug since March 2024; it is now September 2024 and Apple has yet to address our concerns. Surely Apple employees have also experienced this problem?

I was having the same issue of messages (both iMessage and SMS) not synching on my MacBook Air compared to my iPhone, so I updated to the latest software (iPhone to 17.5.1 and MacBook Air to macOS Sonoma 14.5), and I'm still having this issue!

Only temporary solution that seems to work is signing out of my iMessage Apple ID, but that's a pain.

Has anyone found a solution? I never had "Enable messages in iCloud" turned on before this and never had an issue because you don't need that turned on in order for your messages to be synched up, that's just to keep them in the cloud for backups.

I cannot consistently send Messages from my MacBook Air (15" M2 2023 OS 14.4). There are two people (one with an iPhone, the other with an Android) that I can usually send to, but on occasion I get Message Not Sent notices and I can't seem to do anything about it. Those messages don't sync to my iPhone (ancient 2nd gen SE but iOS 17.4) either. I can send to those people consistently from my iPhone.

RE: >On your iPhone, go to Settings -> <your icon at the top> -> iCloud -> Show All<

Where do you see "Show All"? Doesn't appear on my iPhone, iOS 17.4.1.

I never had a problem until I upgraded this Macbook Pro last night to Sonoma 14.4.1. Now I see texts on my phone that don't appear in Messages on this screen.

Hope someone can help. I do nearly half my messaging from this laptop. Thanks.

Sorry, for me the "Apps Using iCloud" section on the iCloud screen shows a partial list, and I have to select "Show All" at the bottom of it to see the rest of the apps, but if your list isn't that long then "Messages in iCloud" is probably shown already and you can just select it. Same with "Show More Apps" on the laptop.

Wow, now I'm afraid to upgrade to 14.4.1. Although maybe the problem isn't actually tied to a particular version but is rather a flaw in the combined upgrade process in general? I've seen posts complaining about it with 14.0, while it only started for me with 14.4. Anyway, good luck (to all of us)!

I have followed urmi02's advice now three times in the last 90 minutes. It works, but do I really have to do this over and over again just to have my Messages sync among my various devices? This has not been a problem for years now, but in one day, they have not synced at least 4 times since I woke up this morning.

Not to mention that I had to unlock my Apple ID account in order to leave this comment, and that was about the 5th time over the past 2 weeks. What is the deal with having to do the same fixes repeatedly???

Also, to document the problem, here are screenshots of my iPhone and Mac that were taken simultaneously today when I submitted my update post. These show the message discrepancies between the iPhone and the Mac. The iPhone's most recent message was "75276". The Mac's most recent message from "Harvey". I took both screenshots simultaneously at 10:45 to confirm that at that exact time, there was a discrepancy between the most recent messages displayed on my Mac and my iPhone. The iPhone's most recent message was a SMS text message (green). The time stamp (that I could not provide) was 6/21/24 11:28pm. The Mac's most recent message was a iMessage (blue). The time stamp (that I could not provide) was 6/21/24 8:29pm.

I have to do this force syncing CONSTANTLY now. My mac never syncs automatically. If it does, it's very intermittent. Suddenly I'll get a bulk update of hundreds of messages. This used to be seamless. Now I have to do "Sync Now" just to get my messages. Even forcing sync will often not bring in messages that I've received on my phone.

I've rebooted my mac. Rebooted my phone. Signed out and back in of iCloud on each. I even (though this was a few months ago) reinstalled macos. I don't know what Apple did but message syncing across devices is absolutely broken nowadays.

I think you have it exactly right, that Apple -- with a spinning Jobs -- is sloppy and careless with updates (that seem to occur too frequently), and one or another "upgrade" has prduced this bug, and Apple is in NO HURRY to fix this problem.....and some others, and include sloppily worded documentation. So we see a long string like this of folks encountering same problem, unfixed. (Reming you of Mr. BG and his outfit? EEEEEEK!)
