On I13 why when I text a husband that is listed along with wife in contacts does she get the text TOO????

I selected the mobile number of a contact of a husband that I had the Husband and wife listed on the first line in contacts and their last name in that line. The text was received by BOTH the Husband and the wife! What can I do to prevent this? I then made a separate listing of the wife and it still showed up on both of their mobile text line!!

iPhone 13, iOS 17

SMS/MMS text (green bubble) is send to a phone number.

iMessage (blue bubble) is send to an Apple ID account.

Please make two contact entries in your Contacts app, one for the husband, one for the wife. None of that shared stuff; that only makes it unmanageable.

If they did something weird like share an Apple ID account, then all their devices would receive that. Apple IDs are personal and shouldn’t be shared. But that is for the recipient to organize, not for the sender to untangle.

If your contact information includes both a phone number and an email that is also their Apple ID, then your iPhone app may use iMessage instead of SMS automatically. To force SMS, one would need to change the settings for the app (temporarily) to not use iMessage.
