Dell Monitor (S2722QC) keeps losing signal from Mac Mini M2

I have had my Mac mini M2 connected USB-C to USB-C to my Dell 27" 4K UHD USB-C Monitor S2722QC since October and encountered no issues with it until today.

The Dell monitor keeps losing signal from the Mac. It has no issues recognising it again when I wake it up with the keyboard or mouse, but after a varying amount of time (seconds to minutes), it loses it signal again producing the message "No signal.... It appears random with no specific actions making it lose signal.

I initially tried multiple resolutions which seemed to be common with the flickering issues experienced with Dell monitors and Macs including:

  • Changing to a HDMI to HDMI cable
  • Making Dell Monitor Menu Changes;
    • Resetting all factory settings
    • Display~USB-C Prioritisation ~ High Resolution
    • Others~ DDC/CI~ Off
    • Others~ LCD Conditioning ~ On
    • Changing brightness to 66%
    • Changing contrast to 90%
  • Making Mac Display Settings changes;
    • Turn on Dark Mode
    • Resolution~ Default for Display
    • Refresh Rate~ 60 Hertz
    • System Preferences~ Displays~ Night Shift~ Schedule~ Off
    • Colour profile~ Generic RGB Profile (tried multiple different RBG modes too)
    • Turned off any Night Mode.
    • Changed the sleep settings to never.
  • Turned the monitor off and on again from the plug.
  • Updated the Mac mini to the latest MacOS Sonoma 14.4
  • Restarted the Mac mini
  • Removed all USB devices from the monitor

I've looked into a firmware update on the Dell monitor itself, but I don't know which operating software to choose as it gives no option for a Mac.

Interestingly, I connected my MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2018 to the monitor using the same USB-C cables, and NO problems?!? Have had a look at the display settings on the MacBook Pro, but these are all the exact same as what I have set on the Mac mini!

Please tell me what is going on and how I can fix this!!! I'm honestly at my wits' end.

Mac mini, macOS 14.2

This sounds like it could be a problem with your monitor or cable. Are you using the cable that came with the monitor or one that's similarly high quality and not too long? I have no trouble using my S2722QC with my MacBook Pro via USB-C.

My monitor came with firmware MB201, which you can check via the Others tab in the monitor's built-in menu. MB201 is a newer version than what's available on Dell's site right now.

One thing for sure is that this monitor's HDMI ports are inferior to USB-C as the HDMI ports are not capable of displaying the monitor's native resolution (4K) at full refresh rate (60 Hz) and full color (24 bit), which is what you would want for an M2 Mac or any modern computer. Shame on you, Dell.

Either way, it sounds like you should contact Dell support since it sounds like you're having hardware problems. I've already received one replacement monitor for a different reason.

Direct USB-C to USB-C for monitor to Macs don’t work very well because monitors are clueless on what’s connected: a power-hungry laptop or power re-buffing desktop.

I would connect the monitor’s USB C to the mini’s USB-A port using suitable C-A adapter/cable to enable hub functions. For video, your monitor comes with 2 HDMI ports - stick to it, it’s way superior. Connect HDMI-HDMI using a cable not longer than 5’, the shorter the better, should fix.
