lightning cable melted/burned while plugged into MacBook

I had my lightning charger plugged into my MacBook Air, it was charging my phone for like 5 minutes maybe but hadn't been charging it for at least 20 mins. Laptop was sitting on my coffee table, usb-c side was plugged in, and the iPhone part of the charger was just resting on the carpet on the floor. Then started smelling burnt plastic and finally realized it was the iPhone end of the charger was burning and melting for no reason. The charger is 6 months old and came with my iPhone. Insane failure on their side and a massive fire risk?!

iPhone XS, iOS 13

pretty much must have been a small short-circuit inside the cable to be able to generate that heat

it should be covered by warranty
