Apple´s barometer app stopped working in iOS 17.4

I have an iPhone 14 Pro, currently running the latest iOS, 17.4.1. Since updating to 17.4. Apple´s pre-installed barometer app has stopped working. I had hoped this might be fixed with the latest update, as I´m a keen weather watcher. I have tried the usual: restarts, forced restarts, and as a last resort deleted the barometer app and went to the App Store to download it again. But it has disappeared, nowhere to be found! Could it be that Apple knows that their barometer app no longer works and has just removed it? But it worked perfectly before iOS 17.4. I have since found another barometer app that works, but I think that Apple´s own pre-installed apps should just work! Does anyone know what´s going on here? It´s not a big deal, as the weather app still shows the correct barometric pressure, but as an experienced iPhone user I´m just puzzled. And yes, I´ve sent Apple feedback. Thanks for any help/insight!

If we’re talking about “barometer & altimeter pro” from the App Store, I also had to enable “Research Sensor & Usage Data “ to get correct readings. Altimeter setting went from a hard-wired 30.78” to 30.07”, which fit in well with surrounding ASOS reports.

The problem I encountered while trying to do this is that the built in Apple Barometer app/widget no longer offers “Always” as an option for Location Services, and it is no longer listed under Motion and Fitness to activate it. My other Barometer app does and is working fine. Seems to me, they cut off access to the built in sensor from their own app in their recent updates…. Hopefully, they fix it.

As you discovered we have to make a change in our settings. No Apple fix required. Here is the full fix for those that are tracking conscious like me, with some added thoughts:

First go to Settings Privacy and Security then select Research Sensor and Usage Data and enable it.  Then go to Motion & Fitness and enable that.  Allow the App to use Motion and Fitness.  Done.  Now it also shows up in my list of app’s as it did not before I made these changes.  My guess is all the people who were dismayed by the App not working after the update are uncomfortable with being tracked, like myself.  So, yes they updated the App to now it being a tracking App, or now forced to tell you so.  The rest is up to you, but keep in mind just with cell service alone and a built in GPS you are being tracked regardless.

My iPhone runs the German version of iOS, because I live and work in Germany, so it has the German version of the App Store, which may differ from a U.S.version! Anyway, below is the app I now use. Maybe look for "Barometer" and then the same app symbol as I´ve shown you (red arrow). By the way, if you open Apple´s standard weather app and scroll right down the barometric pressure is accurately shown, and you can tap on it for more info, but it´s not the same as the defunct barometer app! Cheers, Ian.

The same thing has happened to me. Fortunately, I had already downloaded and was using another more in depth barometer app for more detailed data, and that is working fine. But I still miss having the barometer widget with the current pressure easy to see in the side display. I went into the settings, as was suggested to try and fix this, and found that the barometer widget no longer offers “Always” as an option for location services, and it is no longer listed under Motion and Fitness, and therefore, can’t be activated properly. My guess is that this is the problem. I hope Apple fixes this issue soon, and that it will be resolved in an upcoming update.

Like you, iPhone 14 & after updating to iOS 17.4.1 the native Barometer App stopped working. Downloaded the App update from the App Store as well as followed Settings suggestions as per recommended by others.

So the Barometer does now work (ie gives a reading)but the user interface on the ‘updated’ App is rubbish. So unprofessional! It now looks like a high school project.

To begin with, the screen doesn’t quite fit the phone face so that controls are sitting under the lower and upper margins of the screen and are unaccessible. It now looks very amateurish and to be honest I can’t stand to look at it. It certainly does not conform to what were at one time exceedingly high standards for developer guidelines.

I’m a cruising sailor and look at the Barometer App A LOT. In it’s new degraded manifestation it’s unusable. Please tell me Apple will resolve this and berate the work-experience kid who’s slipped this one in. It’s a shocker.

There has been one that I used successfully on my iPhone 11 from 2019 until just recently. When I recently tried to use the "app" to read atmospheric pressure, it didn't show any results when opened. Neither atmospheric pressure (any units of measure), nor elevation (any units), gave a reading. After using some of the above setting tricks, I was able to get a reading of my "GPS Altitude" on opening the app (feet or meters units), but still no reading/value of "Current Pressure" (in any of the units options).

When I pressed the on-screen button labeled "More", it opens a new window. In that window there is a link at the bottom to "Rate us in the app store". When I press that, I get routed to the app store & a popup box telling me "This app is currently not available in your country or region." I am in the USA. Do not understand what might have changed.

Anyone have any other options? Ideas?
