Preview on my MacBook with macOS Monterey auto save my edits

For instance, I open a photo in Preview, try to brighten it, change contrast, crop it etc. But if I decide I don't like the changes I find when I close the file it has been saved. I can't find a way to turn this feature off.

This is very frustrating and makes the app not only useless but also dangerous as I have lost original files that can't now be replaced. Surely this feature must be user selectable?

As PRP_53 said, you can change this in System Settings, but it affects all applications (or nearly all).

Besides that, you can usually revert back from these changes:

File->Revert to

you can choose "Last Opened", or "Browse All Versions".

The latter gives you a Time Machine-like navigation back in time.

I edited a pdf in Preview, then chose File->Revert to->Browse All Versions...

I am not sure if this will apply to macOS 12 Monterey

But in macOS 13 Ventura or macOS 14 Sonoma

If you make a change to original and do not like it.

With this featured enabled, it will warn you when closing the Edited File

Then, make your choice, keep the changes or discard the changes
